Is it der, die oder das Nordpol?

DER

Finding the right gender of a noun

The most difficult part of learning the German language is the articles (der, die, das) or rather the gender of each noun. The gender of each noun in German has no simple rule. In fact, it can even seem illogical. For example das Mädchen, a young girl is neutral while der Junge, a young boy is male.

It is a good idea to learn the correct article for each new word together - even if it means a lot of work. For example learning "der Hund" (the dog) rather than just Hund by itself. Fortunately, there are some rules about gender in German that make things a little easier. It might be even nicer if these rules didn't have exceptions - but you can't have everything! The best way to learn them is with the App - Der-Die-Das Train! (available for iOS and Android)

German nouns belong either to the gender masculine (male, standard gender) with the definite article der, to the feminine (feminine) with the definite article die, or to the neuter (neuter) with the definite article das.

  • for masculine: points of the compass, weather (Osten, Monsun, Sturm; however it is: das Gewitter), liquor/spirits (Wodka, Wein, Kognak), minerals, rocks (Marmor, Quarz, Granit, Diamant);

  • for feminine: ships and airplanes (die Deutschland, die Boeing; however it is: der Airbus), cigarette brands (Camel, Marlboro), many tree and plant species (Eiche, Pappel, Kiefer; aber: der Flieder), numbers (Eins, Million; however it is: das Dutzend), most inland rivers (Elbe, Oder, Donau; aber: der Rhein);

  • for neutrals: cafes, hotels, cinemas (das Mariott, das Cinemaxx), chemical elements (Helium, Arsen; however it is: der Schwefel, masculine elements have the suffix -stoff), letters, notes, languages and colors (das Orange, das A, das Englische), certain brand names for detergents and cleaning products (Ariel, Persil), continents, countries (die artikellosen: (das alte) Europa; however exceptions include: der Libanon, die Schweiz …).

[2] “If this spiral was approached to the north pole of a magnet with an end that we want to call A, so it came into being a stream from the direction he had had if one with the north pole into the spiral, namely on This end a, which would have driven in, although it was indifferent to whether the spiral was in the extension of the magnetic leg or as always on the same way to the same, or was placed over the two thighs of the magnetic so that the end of the North Pole touched […] Already in the first attempts, when the Cylinder was created in the direction of the extension of the north poles to it, I received a very weak electricity, but from the earlier direction that could be followed that the magnetism created by the spiral Cylinder the direct effect of the north poles on the spiral of size, because it can just be taken as if you are in the spiral and a second in the same direction the spiral would have pushed. ”(1854)

[2] „Bei der Erdaxe ist die Richtung nach dem Nordpole zu verstanden, und das negative Zeichen des entsprechenden Moments zeigt an, dass die magnetische Axe einen stumpfen Winkel mit jener macht, d. i. dass ihr magnetischer Nordpol nach Süden gekehrt ist.“ (1867)

[2] “In the case of earth axes, the direction according to the north pole is to be understood, and the negative sign of the corresponding moment indicates that the magnetic axe makes a blunt angle with that power, dä i. that their magnetic North Pole has turned south. ”(1867)

[2] „In Europa war die Abweichung des Nordpoles der Magnetnadel vom astronomischen Meridian im sechzehnten Jahrhundert östlich; die Nadel näherte sich von da an fortwährend der Mittagslinie, und die Abweichung ging sodann in eine westliche über, die bis zu einem Maximum zunahm, hierauf aber wieder abnahm.“ (1842)
